Digital Natives are people, who have grown up in the digital world using technology as a way to,
     ·         communicate,
     ·         record,
     ·         educate,
     ·         and understand society

Digital natives have had access to computers, cell phones, email, and other forms of technology since birth. The digital natives possess a high level of media literacy. A digital immigrant is an individual who was born before the existence of digital technology and adopted it to some extent later in life. Digital natives are comfortable doing more than one thing at once, and in fact sometimes need to be doing more than one thing at once in order to be productive.
Positive characterizes of digital natives;
  •        working in teams
  •         greater self-confidence and independency
  •          higher intelligence
  •          achievement orientation
  •          innovation
  •          entertainment oriented
  •          critical approach towards information
Digital natives learn much better through active learning; by doing rather than learning through instructions. Digital tool based visual and auditory things therefore their skills more developed.


On the other hand; there are some negative effects on the children. Negative characteristics
·         superficial interests
·         attention disorders
·         speech disorders
·         aggression
·         personality disorders

                                                            Media literacy is a repertoire of competencies that enable people to;

  •   analyze,
  •  evaluate,
  • and create messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres, and forms. Education for media literacy often uses an inquiry-based pedagogic model that encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, hear, and read. Media literacy education provides tools to help people critically analyze messages, offers opportunities for learners to broaden their experience of media, and helps them develop creative skills in making their own media messages. Media literacy education may provide a type of protection to children and young people by helping them make good choices in their media consumption habits, and patterns of usage.




Media literacy skills can help children, youth and adults:
  •      Develop critical thinking skills
  •       Understand how media messages shape our culture and society
  •      Evaluate media messages based on our own experiences, skills, beliefs,
  •      Create and distribute our own media message
  •      Advocate for a changed media system

A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software application for the administration, documentation, tracking, reporting and delivery of e-learning education courses or training programs. LMSs range from systems for managing training and educational records to software for distributing online or blended/hybrid college courses over the Internet with features for online collaboration. It supports classroom teaching and offering courses to a larger population of learners. A lot of learners can be online at the same time. And they can reach all content whenever they want.  Multiple users can access the LMS at any given point in time. Teachers can upload assignments, quizzes, discussions, survey, file or folder about their lessons.  Students can review their performance based on the tests and quizzes conducted by the teachers. And these things can reach by students. LMS accommodates various features- documentation and administration, recording and tracking events and programs, classroom learning.

Educational games are games explicitly designed with educational purposes, or which have incidental or secondary educational value. Educational games are games that are designed to teach people about certain subjects, expand concepts, reinforce development, understand an historical event or culture, or assist them in learning a skill as they play. Educational games for kids make learning fun with math facts, language arts, and more. 


Especially kids can learn alphabet,  numbers, colors, animals or fruits with playing simple educational games. And advancing ages children can learn something such as; history or languages with games. When children are very young playing educational games may be the only way to hold their attention. Games has visual and auditory element. This element helps the children taking attention at a long time. The games are an extension of their play time while they learn social skills and coordination. Because this games requires the ability to more than one thing at the same time. Therefore children’s skills can be developing with playing these games.

 Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. Web 2.0 is allows to creating visual things and sharing visual and auditory. The widespread use of social media has increased the use of web 2.0. Especially the there are millions of users of social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter. Millions of user actively uses Twitter and Facebook every day. And they regularly share something such as photographs or videos from followers or friends.

Facebook allows to collaboration learning in the education. And it allows students to develop research and querying skills. It provide discussion skill from the students because they can do comment the discussion topics. Student’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills can be increase. And they can learn; How to use the social media? It means they can learn media literacy.

My department is Computer Education and Instructional Technology. Instructional technology have to follow some developing and changing technology such as blogs, games, simulations, wiki, etc. And also I should follow and use these developing and changing technologies in my instruction. For this reason, I am trying to develop on this issue. I want to use these subjects effectively when I give a lesson. In the first step for that I took a game based learning lesson at last year. Thanks to this course, I learned how I can design an educational game. And now, I want to learn how I can use these educational games in my lessons. How I can do gamification in the classroom. Moreover, I want to learn tools which are most effective for taking my students’ attentions by following developing new educational technology. I hope that end of the course, I will use these new media  tools effectively in my instruction.

How teachers can use social media in the classroom?




First of all for the use social media in the classroom; teachers have to use social media correctly. Some old teachers do not want to use the internet and other technological tools. They prefer to use traditional way in their lessons. But students grow up using technological tools. And they want to use these things in the lesson. 

All students currently use social media. If teachers can use social media their lesson; student interest can be increased. So that students’ attention can be take in the lesson.  Some failed students can be more successful in the lesson. Teachers can use social media for the taking attention students’. And teachers can provide participation all students lessons. For example; teachers can open a Facebook group for the lesson and they can initiate the discussion. Especially crowded classrooms this ways may be efficient. All students cannot participant lesson at the limited time. For this reason; student can express itself in the Facebook groups. Lessons teacher can control their students.

Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is the term given to describe a second generation of the World Wide Web that is focused on the ability for people to collaborate and share information online. Web 2.0 basically refers to the transition from static html web pages to a more dynamic web that is more organized and is based on serving Web applications to users. Other improved functionality of web 2.0 includes open communication with an emphasis on Web based communities of users, and more open sharing of information. Over time Web 2.0 has been used more as a marketing term than a computer science based term. Blogs, wikis, and Web services are all seen as components of Web 2.0.


1. Animoto

  Animoto is a web application that produces videos from photos, video clips and music. Animoto analyzes the provided photos, video clips and music to generate a video similar to a trailer. According to the website, the song is analyzed, producing a unique video every time. The site also claims that no two videos are ever the same. 

 2. GoAnimate

  GoAnimate is do it yourself animated video website. Consumers, educators and businesses all need to create videos. It might be for fun, to make a presentation, to illustrate historical scenes, make a demo video, or produce a piece of professional training. The list of use cases is endless. However, producing video can be difficult, time consuming and expensive. And sometimes it still comes out dark and blurry, with muffled sound.

According to the above information, teachers can use animoto and GoAnimate in their instructions for keeping attention their students. They can prepare an animation for information which students feel bored, with them.




3. Flickr

  Flickr is an image hosting and video hosting website, and web services suite. In addition to being a popular website for users to share and embed personal photographs, and effectively an online community, the service is widely used by photo researchers and by bloggers to host images that they embed in blogs and social media.

Teachers can use this tool for sharing an image which is related to their subjects. And also anyone who wants to add comments under the images, they can do it. Thanks to this tool, their subject can be more understandable for students.  







4. GoogleDocs
  Google Docs is a freeware web based office suite offered by Google within its Google Drive service. It also was a storage service but has since been replaced by Google Drive. It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real time with other users.





 5. Edmodo

Teachers can uploads everything whatever they want for students. And students can also upload everything and update those things. And also these changes can be appearing instantly.
